Welcome to Zurich Airport (ZRH). We are dedicated to making your journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible. This guide will help you navigate Zurich Airport with ease, from planning your trip to boarding your flight.
Before Your Flight
Check-in Procedures
At Zurich Airport, we offer multiple check-in options to suit your needs:
- Online Check-in: Many airlines offer online check-in, typically opening 24-48 hours before departure. This convenient option allows you to select your seat and print your boarding pass from home or your hotel. Some airlines also offer mobile boarding passes, which you can display on your smartphone.
- Airport Check-in Counters: Our spacious check-in hall houses counters for all airlines operating from Zurich. These counters generally open 2-3 hours before scheduled departure times for international flights and 1-2 hours for domestic flights. We recommend arriving with ample time to complete the check-in process stress-free.
- Self-Service Kiosks: For a quicker check-in experience, look for the self-service kiosks located in the check-in area. These user-friendly machines allow you to check in, select your seat, and print your boarding pass in just a few minutes.
Baggage Information
Understanding baggage rules can save you time and potential fees:
- Carry-on Luggage: Most airlines allow one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item (such as a laptop bag or purse). Size and weight restrictions vary by airline, but a common limit is 55 x 40 x 20 cm and up to 10 kg. Always check with your specific airline for their latest policies.
- Checked Baggage: Allowances for checked baggage depend on your ticket type and destination. Generally, economy class passengers are allowed one piece of checked luggage weighing up to 23 kg, while business class may allow two pieces. Again, it’s crucial to verify the exact allowance with your airline.
- Oversize and Special Items: If you’re traveling with large sports equipment, musical instruments, or other special items, contact your airline in advance. Many require pre-booking for such items, and additional fees may apply.
- Prohibited Items: For everyone’s safety, certain items are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage. These include explosives, flammable substances, and certain sharp objects. A full list is available on our website and at check-in counters.
- Left Luggage: The airport offers a left luggage service if you want to explore Zurich without your bags. It’s located in the Airport Center.
Security Screening
Our top priority is ensuring the safety of all passengers. Here’s what you need to know about our security procedures:
Security Checkpoints: After check-in, proceed to the security screening area. Here, both you and your carry-on items will be screened. To expedite this process:
- Have your boarding pass and a valid ID ready.
- Remove large electronic devices (like laptops and tablets) from your bag.
- Place liquids in a clear, resealable plastic bag.
- Remove outerwear, belts, and shoes if requested.
Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs): The 100ml rule applies here. All liquids must be in containers of 100ml or less, placed in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 liter. Exceptions are made for medications and baby food, but you may need to prove their necessity.
Advanced Imaging Technology: We use state-of-the-art body scanners that respect your privacy while ensuring thorough security checks. If you have any concerns or medical conditions that may affect screening, please inform our staff.
Passport and Visa Requirements
Ensuring you have the correct documentation is crucial for a hassle-free journey:
- Passport Validity: For international travel, your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay. Some countries have specific requirements, so check well in advance.
- Visa Information: Depending on your nationality and destination, you may need a visa. We recommend checking visa requirements at least a month before travel. For trips within the Schengen Area, EU citizens typically only need a valid ID card.
- Useful Resources: Visit the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs website or your home country’s foreign office site for the most up-to-date travel document information.
